Hamsa Herbs Organic Farm in the Sredna Gora Mountains

Welcome to our family-run herb farm, where passion meets tradition in the heart of the scenic Sredna Gora Mountains of central Bulgaria. Here, we cultivate over 40 different herb species, all grown with love and organic practices. Care for the environment, people, and good land stewardship are our guiding principles, and we’re proud to play a part in breathing new life into Bulgaria’s countryside through sustainable farming. From our fields to your table, we deliver fresh, high-quality herbs you can trust. Grown responsibly and bursting with natural goodness.

Our Herbals

Explore our delicious, eco-friendly tea blends, herbal extracts, and herb salts, each packed with flavour! We grow or gather every herb right here on our farm, picking them at just the best moment and drying them straight away in a solar-oriented facility near the fields, and handling them with care to ensure the best quality.

Our farm is dedicated to reducing waste, which is why we use 100% compostable packaging for our tea. Our other herbals are offered in either glass or paper packaging. We only use plastic (food-grade) containers when it is the better option for long-term use.

All our herbals are available with English or Bulgarian labels.

Our Farm

We are passionate about organic farming and caring for our land and its creatures great or small, so we never use pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, or synthetic fertilisers. By nurturing a thriving variety of plants, we support local biodiversity and foster healthy relationships between our herbs and helpful soil organisms like mycorrhizae. This approach helps our plants better handle climate challenges, like drought or too much rain, reduces pests naturally, and promotes a vibrant ecosystem.

Our herb gardens are designed for pollinators, bringing in butterflies, beetles, and many different insects. To make our habitats even richer, we plant trees and shrubs, boost soil health with cover crops, on-farm composting, and let plant residue return nutrients to the earth. We also leave plenty of seeds for the birds during winter. We work hard to keep our environmental impact small by using mainly rainwater for irrigation and minimise the use of electricity in our herb dryer.

Instead of growing just monocultures, we plant in small, diverse plots, and let the herbs also choose their own place to germinate. We cultivate only part of our land, encouraging wild herbs on the rest by selective mowing, keeping invasive plants at bay, and helping seeds spread. Our herbs are harvested responsibly, following WHO GACP standards for medicinal plants.

You can find us listed under 2/BG23094 in the Bulgarian Register for Organic Producers.

Meet the family behind the herbs

We are Laura, Andreas, and Maxine, the family behind Hamsa Herbs.

Laura is an ethnobotanist with 25 years of experience working with herbs. Her journey began as a teenager in the Netherlands after taking a herbalism course, which inspired her to seek opportunities with herbalists across Europe. Laura combines hands-on expertise with academic credentials, holding a Bachelor’s in Medicinal Horticulture and a Master’s in Ethnobotany from English universities. During her Doctoral research in Bulgaria, she delved into the herbal trade and worked with herb collectors in deprived rural areas. This experience motivated her to advocate for a more sustainable and fair approach to herbal production. One based on kindness and care for both people and nature, while creating value in the locality where the herbs are actually grown. This vision inspired the founding of Hamsa Herbs, and we began farming in 2021.

With a background in Slavic linguistics and journalism and a lifelong interest in running a smallholding, Andreas joined Laura early on. Together we explored rural Bulgaria and soon realised the potential for creating something meaningful.

We transformed a derelict house and overgrown land into a nearly two-acre organic farm. Laura manages all aspects of farm operations, from planning and herb growing to harvesting, herb processing, and product creation. Andreas oversees land cultivation, irrigation, sales, and many administrative tasks on the farm. When the farm requires less attention, Laura writes detailed plant monographs, deeply exploring the history, scientific knowledge, and cultural stories of herbs. She is also inspired by herbal pedagogy and storytelling. Besides farming, Andreas loves literature, works in tourism by organising tours across South-East Europe, and writes articles on Bulgaria’s socio-political issues.

Our little daughter, Maxine, was just a baby when we began our farm, and now she grows up surrounded by nature, exploring and learning with herbs and all the beautiful creatures that live here, cultivating her curiosity and sense of wonder about the world.

Get Involved

Every year, we welcome volunteers from around the world to experience herb farming with us. With a few hours of help each day, you’ll enjoy hearty home-cooked meals, a cosy place to stay, and good company. Most of our volunteers come for one to three weeks, but we’re happy to discuss longer stays too. Whether you’re eager to learn about herbs, dreaming about your own farm, or just looking to experience life in the heart of nature, you’ll feel right at home here. Discover more about volunteering with us on Workaway.

We’re also open to creative ideas that help strengthen community, promote sustainability, and foster care for one another.

Please reach out if you’re interested in collaborating with our farm, organising activities for children or adults, or bringing creative projects to life like botanical drawing classes, outdoor photography, or yoga in the fresh air. If you’re an artist exploring the herbal world or a student seeking to conduct a thesis project in land-based studies or entomology at our farm, we’d be happy to hear from you.
